FAQ

What can I expect from my first appointment ?

We know that walking through the door to see a psychologist can be an overwhelming experience. Minding Me Psychology ensures that therapy is a welcoming, supportive and safe space.

Your psychologist will initially spend part of the session going through paperwork including the consent form and your Mental Health Treatment Plan if you have one. The consent form will provide you with information about confidentiality, fees and other important details about the session. You will have a chance to read this form prior to your appointment.

The first psychology appointment is then usually spent discussing the nature of the difficulties that brought you into therapy. In addition to spending time better understanding your difficulties, your psychologist will also ask you about your background, relationships, work history, medical history and whether you have received counselling in the past. Towards the end of the session, time will be spent discussing your desired goals and how we can work collaboratively with you to achieve these. Your psychologist will work with you in sessions to develop new skills, build on existing strengths and most importantly improve your overall mental health and personal wellbeing.

How long do sessions last ?

Sessions are approximately 50 minutes long.

Do you offer after hours appointments ?

Minding Me Psychology offers flexible appointment times, including weekends and evening appointments.

Do I need a referral to see a psychologist ?

You do not need a referral from your GP or a psychiatrist to make an appointment with a psychologist.

Do you receive a Medicare rebate when you see a psychologist ?

If you have a referral from a GP or a psychiatrist for a Mental Health Treatment Plan you will be eligible to receive a Medicare rebate of $129.55 per session with a clinical psychologist. You are eligible to receive this rebate up to 10 sessions per calendar year.

You will need to make an appointment with your GP who will assess whether you are eligible for a Mental Health Treatment Plan. To be able to claim the Medicare rebate for your session you will need to bring a copy of your Mental Health Treatment Plan to your first appointment with your psychologist.

Can I claim rebates using my private health insurance ?

If you have private health insurance that includes psychology as an ‘extras cover’ you may be eligible for a rebate. It is recommended that you contact your insurance provider to discuss whether your ‘extras cover’ includes psychological services and the rebate amount received per session. Please note that you are only able to receive one form of rebate for each session (e.g., either your private health insurance or Medicare).
